Search engine consists of 3 parts:
- The crawlers ( this is also and often called bots or spiders)
- An index
- An algorithm
The process begins with the bots or say spider, travels the web through links and links connects pages together. The spider then look for data, particularly looking for contents, headings and links which contain information about what the page is about and how it is structured, this is done by the spider 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 52 weeks year.
When the spider passed through a website, it saves the html versions of the website pages, saving it into a large and enormous data base called index. It als finds all the indexes news items, links, images and videos to embed in the search result, the index is updated every time the spider comes around again and perhaps finds new information.
In the case of Google for example, the spider revisits depending on how important google think your website is important or how oftern you update your website with new information.
So far, the explanations above should have revealed to you how important the content of a page is to the index, but the queston is, how does it translate to ranking? Search engines use algorithyms for this. The algorithms.

The search engine algorithms take the search engine from the index, makes a calculations based on some factors which determines whether the a result would be useful for the searcher. Then it uses this calculations to see which order of pages the search engine result page should show. The seach engine result page, also known as SERP, is simply the page where search engine results show during search activities.
